Board Members Present: Mark Lichtenberger, Charlie Hafer, Marty Bergman, Melanie Whittington and Linda Jackson, Trudy Atkins and Jerry Snyder. Absent: Terry Whittington and Trudy Atkins. Guests: 16 Carolina Heartland members.

Call to Order: A special called meeting of the Carolina Heartland Board meeting began at 1:30 pm at the Grange. The meeting was called to address the concerns signed by 20 Carolina Heartland members regarding the Board's decision to cancel the September Showcase at their meeting held June 29, 2017. Mark Lichtenberger, Vice-President presided over the meeting.

1.September Showcase – Mark presented the rationale behind the Board's unanimous decision to cancel the September showcase. The primary reason for the decision was the waning monthly dance attendance and paucity of volunteer support for the Black Tie and monthly chapter dances. Several other Board members gave additional supporting background for the decision. Mark acknowledged and expressed appreciation of the CH members writing the letter requesting that the September Showcase go on as previously schedule. Several CH members expressed their concerns and reiterated their support for the September Showcase. Linda Jackson moved that we proceed with the Showcase; Jerry Snyder 2nd the motion which passed unanimously by the Board members present. Next steps: Linda Jackson asked member present to sign up with her to formally volunteer for the Showcase which Lib Johnson has graciously volunteered to coordinate. Charlie Hafer is to confirm date and deposit for September 17th with the Shriner's Club (this has previous been canceled but an email had been sent to hold on this decision).

2.Volunteers – there has been a lack of volunteers to help with monthly dances especially set up and teller. Carolina Heartland members in attendance were encouraged to sign up with Linda Jackson at the dance following the meeting.

3.Board elections – The timeline for establishing a Nominating committee and the Election process was reviewed. Members were asked to volunteer for either being on the nominating committee or running for Board positions and to submit their name to Linda Jackson.

4.Other member questions:

  • What are the plans for National Ballroom Dance week? Plan: to be addressed by the Board
  • When are we going to have a member meeting? Plan: later this year – date to be determined
  • Why aren't the meeting minutes on the Web site? Plan: They are and will be after Board approval.

The meeting concluded at 2:15 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Marty Bergman, Secretary
