Susan Palmer: Helping People Make Marvelous Memories At Palmer Dance Studio
By Diane Irving
Within one year, Susan Palmer went from dance student to dance instructor. It was an unexpected surprise since she started dance as a hobby. Despite dual college degrees in industrial chemistry and the culinary arts, ballroom dance became her preferred career of choice. In 2012, she fell in love with the art of movement. Five years later, Sue is a successful certified ballroom instructor with her own studio. Local couples agree, Sue transforms beginner dancers into advanced danseurs with melodic magic, and continuously provides flawless customer service.
A Delaware native, Sue and her family moved to the Upstate with her husband’s job in 2006. Chip and Sue have been married for 28 years, and have three kids who are all in college including Sarah (19), Charlie (26), and Thomas (20). To occupy her spare time, Sue started taking dance lessons. After dancing for a year, her instructor invited her to teach at the studio. At first, she declined thinking she couldn’t possibly teach. However, something told her to give it a try, “I’d never done anything like that before in my life and it was a challenge,” she says. She soon discovered she was good at it and was unequivocally hooked. Through Skype lessons with Diane Jarmalow, founder of the Ballroom Dance Teachers College and well-known national examiner for dance teachers, Sue earned her certification. In the process, she also learned all the different ballroom dances and how to start a business. In 2013, she decided to use her new business knowledge and open up shop. Business has thrived at a quick step pace ever since. In addition to her dance business, she’s even performed dances at the Ronald McDonald Gala and other local events. When she’s not teaching or performing, Sue nurtures other hobbies including gardening, cooking, and sewing. Evidently, there are no limits on where her other talents and hobbies will take her. Surely, she will conquer them all with the same momentum and success as ballroom dance.
Palmer Dance Studio provides private or semi-private lessons for adults only. Lessons are an hour long and are available to groups of up to 20 people, smaller groups, or individuals. She teaches the most popular ballroom dance styles to her customers. Currently, the majority of lessons Sue provides are for wedding couples that want help with their first dance. She also does private lessons for other couples as well. One of the best rewards Sue reveals is when customers come in with low confidence, “An hour later, they are moving around the dance floor and they’re smiling,” she says. Another plus she adds is, “I just love to meet people and hear they’re stories and how they meet. It’s just so fun.”
There are several advantages Palmer Dance Studio offers that other studios don’t. One major perk for couples – there’s no membership fee. And, her students can buy as many lessons as they want with no contract. Both parties make a lesson schedule and payment is made up front per lesson. Sue is one of the only certified official ballroom dance instructors in the area. While her clientele consists mostly of beginners, Sue teaches any level of dancer. Wedding couples can come to her with any song, and she can create the choreography to go with it. Choreography is an added cost, but she can personalize the dance to each couple’s personality, “We’re going to make your dance reflect your personality and the theme of your wedding,” she explains. Another benefit for dancers is that her business is located at her home, which provides privacy, “It’s not intimidating because they are coming to my home. It’s like they’re visiting me,” she says.
With 5-star ratings across the board on Weddingwire.com, Google and Facebook, it’s safe to say she comes highly recommended. Check out a review by one satisfied wedding couple:
Ashley: “My fiancé and I were able to learn our dance in only two lessons with no previous experience. We went in on our first lesson with no idea what to expect and we left wanting more right then. Sue's vision for us is all we could have ever dreamed of. Sue is an amazing teacher and I would love to take lessons from her again!”
