My dance story,

After a jaunt in the service I decided to start life in San Francisco rather than come home to Ohio. Throwing my sea bag into the nearest dumpster I settled in to a life in the big city.

In San Francisco in the late seventies or so, a buckeye lost in the big city I found myself in the middle of the newly found Disco craze. Plying the many dance and night clubs of the area I found myself dancing with a firey Latina Celia from Oakland.

She danced with joy and discipline, something I needed at the time and she had a mission. We found ourselves meeting time after time to perfect our newly found craft. We worked the timing, the moves into a well honed fluid series from beginning to end until the awkwardness disappeared into a memory . She was twice my age at the time and that didn't bother me... I had a dance partner on fire.

One time at place more family friendly I noticed her watching a gaggle of young girls and to my surprise we were impressing her brood.

From that I engaged in a surprising new direction. I found out my best friend and wing man, a cultured son of a diplomat African native and I found the dance halls in the black neighborhoods wonderful places to groove our moves and try many types of dance.

We held parties at his place around the corner from the famous painted ladies of San Francisco's Alamo Square. With a group of eager Africans and this crazy guy from Ohio we held tribal dance sessions after our dance parties.

At one party a very conservatively dressed self professed librarian barely moved through out the night. When floors began to bounce she threw her shawl down and busted down some dramatic dance moves on every one wowwing the crowd. We ended the night with our version of the West African hunting dance ending with the come on fertility dance and managed to find her red faced. Quite a night considering no actual fertilization took place.

... and yes I am back, Rich Luton
